RI SHRM Statement on Recent Supreme Court Ruling on Affirmative Action in Higher Education

Dear Members of the Rhode Island SHRM Community,

On June 29, 2023, the United States Supreme Court issued an opinion in two related cases, Students for Fair Admissions v. President and Fellows of Harvard College and Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. University of North Carolina, curbing race-based affirmative action in higher education. RI SHRM echoes the statement of the Society for Human Resource Management on these decisions, particularly the following:

The U.S. Supreme Court has spoken and clarified the constitutional issues surrounding affirmative action plans in higher education. SHRM respects the rule of law. Whether or not one agrees with the ruling, we must all turn to the critical task of supporting higher education human resource professionals as they both comply with today’s ruling and develop innovative approaches to build better workplaces for an increasingly diverse workforce. SHRM will always be a part of finding solutions that deliver for organizations and the people they serve.

Although the decision does not directly address Diversity, Equity & Inclusion programs and efforts many of our colleagues lead in their daily employment settings, it serves as a reminder that organizations may want to carefully review such initiatives for potential areas of risk.

For members who would like to know more about the decision and how it might impact their DEI initiatives, RI SHRM invites you to join a program hosted by Diversity & Inclusion Professionals (DAIP) on July 11 (which you can register for here), or to reach out to RI SHRM leadership with questions. RI SHRM remains committed to supporting its members in navigating these important issues, and will endeavor to keep its members informed of any pertinent developments.

Yesterday’s ruling serves as a reminder of the vital role members of the RI SHRM community play in shaping the workforce of tomorrow. We uphold our values to; (1) provide support, networking, and education to the human resources community; (2) be inclusive and promote diversity; (3) be leaders in human resources and business strategies, driving best practices; (4) appropriately influence legislation and legislators.

We look forward to offering future programming to support the changing needs of the modern workforce and support you during this historic time.

Thank you,

RI SHRM Board of Directors

State of Our Country - RI SHRM Hears You

Dear RI SHRM Community,

We continue to be heartbroken about the news events reported over the last week. Between the appalling video of Tyree Nichols, mass shootings, and other horrific events that were featured, we all feel heaviness as we go into this new week.

More lives continue to be lost at the hands of police violence and mass shootings across our nation. At RI SHRM, creating an inclusive and equitable workforce is an important value for us and we would like to use this opportunity as a call to do more. We feel that this needs to be our call to do more, speak out, speak up, and look at our colleagues, family members, loved ones, and ourselves with greater empathy.

This coming week, we ask our leaders, supervisors, managers, teachers - anyone in a leadership capacity to check in on your employees and students. The outcry of pain, worry, and anguish may be silent and may manifest itself in other ways than tears or anger. Check in. Give space. Listen.

In line with this, it’s important to come back to the basics of how we interact with friends, colleagues, and others. In these heavy times, it’s so important to set some time aside to ask: How are you? What do you need? How can I help?

It may seem trivial, but it's important. Employee health and well-being can be directly tied to empathy and connection and are integral during these difficult times.

We encourage you to reach out to your employees. If you offer an Employee Assistance Program, it would be a great time to provide them with a refresh on what those benefits are and how to access them.

As our Director of Operations Kevin Matta shared on his linkedin earlier today, here are some links that we find helpful to either recharge your spirit and/or invite you to a place of reflection:

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT 3rd Quarter Article, October 2020

As we get close to concluding one of the most contentious and unforgiving years in the modern era, now may be the time we Restore, Rebuild and Reconvene to assist our employees as they return to the brick and mortar workplace.

The question is: what does the workforce look like as employees return from remote work to a workplace that they may not even find recognizable? It seems that an orientation to the “new normal” may be in order, focusing on the trauma of working from home with little privacy, to reimagining what the workday may look like and feel like to the employee returning from more than 6 months in home confinement in some instances. As the Human Resources profession pivoted from the brick and mortar workforce to a remote workforce and back again, HR has been at the forefront in managing these evolving workforce paradigms.

Now, as the reopening phases begin, employees may be coming back to the office, factory, retail store, and other locations in large numbers. How can HR lead this transition back to the workplace in a manner in which employees feel welcomed, unafraid, nor concerned about family left at home without childcare or family care, and can focus on the workload placed in front of them?

Governor's Workforce Board FY 2020 Grants Released

The Work Immersion and Incumbent Worker Training Grant programs are open for FY20. You can find an attached one-pager that summarizes all of the changes for the fiscal year.

Work Immersion has remained relatively unchanged other than a few administrative changes. The biggest is that new hires are now defined as employees whose hire date was no more than 28 days prior to the start of the contract.

The most significant change is with IWTG. The contract limit has been reduced to $30,000 from $50,000 and an employer may not have two contracts equal more than $30,000 combined. This is to allow more employers the opportunity to participate in the IWTG program.
Both programs can be found here: https://gwb.ri.gov/programs-and-incentives

Tri-State SHRM Student Case Competition & Career Summit Fosters Teamwork, Problem-Solving, and Networking!

The beautiful Rocky Top Student Center at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, CT was the site for the 2019 Tri-State SHRM Student Case Competition. Quinnipiac was this year’s host university and sponsor of the event, held in partnership with the Connecticut SHRM StateCouncil and SHRM National, the organizing body for HR professionals.

Six student teams from CT, MA and RI competed in a student competition on April 13, 2019 and one Connecticut and one Rhode Island university took first place in the Undergraduate and Graduate Team Divisions.

Placing first in the Undergraduate division was the Quinnipiac University (CT) team of Jena Hook and Taylor Martin;

first in the Graduate division were the Johnson and Wales (RI) team of Zenobiya Khambarti and Antonilia Anthony. Fisher University of Massachusetts won second place in both categories with two teams: Undergraduates Eugenie Coste, Jacob Gavin and Zihul Zhang and Graduates Ilia Barg, Osvaldo Borrero and Plenary Shah.

Winning teams took home a $500 cash prize for their University.

The competitions involved a case study that teams analyzed and then presented their case solutions that included preparing a written executive summary and a 15-minute oral presentation. Teams were required to use integrated HR thinking and knowledge gained through their studies to develop and present their case solution. Preliminary and final oral presentation rounds were judged onsite by a panel of SHRM members; as requested last year, all attendees were able to view the final rounds.

The all-day student conference was attended by 19 students and 6 faculty advisors from the three states as well as some 30+ HR professional volunteers and judges and SHRM national Field Services Director Susan Post, SHRM-SCP. Workshops were offered to attendees, as well as a Career Zone, where students could meet one-on-one with HR professionals to discuss their job search, HR career opportunities and other career tips. Myra Quick, Western New England University Director of HR and Employee Development offered a workshop titled “You’ve Landed that First Job . . . Now What?”, which was well-received by students about to enter the workforce. Professor Nicholas Smith of Quinnipiac presented a workshop on “Ally-Building”, focusing on building real-world skills in supporting marginalized populations. A lively panel of HR professionals took to the stage at lunch to talk about their careers in HR: Gary Convertino, Ed.D, SHRM-CP/PHR and Consultant; Karen Eichstaedt, MSIR, Event Planner from CT State Council, and Susan Post, SHRM-SCP. SHRM National Field Services Director.

The day ended with a networking event for students and HR professionals; on all students minds’ was breaking into that first HR job and managing their careers.

Next year, the planning team will be headed up by the Massachusetts SHRM State Council; the Tri-State area rotates among Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts councils.

“The Student Case Competition and Career Summit offers a unique opportunity for HR students to apply in-class learning to real-world HR scenarios and showcase their knowledge to seasoned HR practitioners” said Susan Post, SHRM’s Field Service Director. Co-Event Planner Karen Eichstaedt commented that “ it was a joy to see the next generation of HR professionals getting their start in the field. They are miles ahead already in understanding the importance of HR in attracting, retaining and developing human capital.”
