State & Legislative Affairs

The State & Legislative Affairs Core Leadership Area communicates to the State Chapter and SHRM National those issues that are concerns to their businesses/organizations/those of SHRM members to actively influence the shaping of public policy in Rhode Island.

State & Legislative Affairs also facilitates efforts to provide SHRM and SHRM Chapter members with information on State/Federal legislative and regulatory issues affecting the workplace and the management of human resources.

State Legislation Tracker

RI SHRM Legislative Affairs Core Leadership Area continues to track proposed state legislation in the House and Senate that may be of interest to Human Resources Professionals. We monitor this legislation and frequently involve our members in advocacy efforts, including providing expert testimony to inform legislators of our interest and position on workplace legislation that impacts employers and employees.

Guide to Workplace Investigations Checklist

When an employee makes an informal or formal complaint, the employer should take immediate steps to stop the alleged conflict, protect involved parties and begin investigations. Under many laws, employers are legally obligated to investigate complaints (harassment, discrimination, retaliation, safety and ethical) in a timely manner. In addition, any appropriate corrective action is required to be taken by the employer to ensure illegal actions and behaviors cease immediately.

Given that every complaint has the potential to become a lawsuit, employers should investigate every case in a manner in which it can be presented to a court of law, if necessary. Use this checklist provided by Epstein, Becker & Green, to ensure that you are following the right steps for a workplace investigation.
